What Is Life Coaching? An Interview With Liz Cleves by Jane Thurnell-Read

Life coaches and life coaching seem to be everywhere, so you may be wondering what is involved and whether it's for you. I asked Liz Cleves, a life coach based in Cornwall to explain more about it.

What is life coaching (LC)?

Life coaching can enable people to make positive changes to their lives and to feel more in charge of their own destiny. LC is a temporary relationship between the Life Coach and the client. The coaching process has a clear form whose purpose is to lead the client to make effective decisions and take actions (that they themselves have chosen) so that they can change, improve or develop some part of their life. LC is not a therapy although the outcomes may be therapeutic. Neither is it counselling.

Who can benefit from it?

LC works well for clients who have issues or challenges to do with relationships, career or business matters, coping with change, achieving ambitions, maintaining work/leisure balance, developing and sustaining motivation, developing self esteem and confidence, conquering feelings of failure, clearing away doubts, fears and anxieties, improving self image and inter-personal skills.

What happens in a typical session?

A session lasts for one hour. It can be held face to face, or over the phone. At the outset of the meeting the coach and client discuss what needs to be done and any relevant background that has led the client to meet with the coach. The LC and client both agree to make a 100% find a life coachcommitment to the work that must be done in and after the session. During the session a sense of direction is established and then an achievable goal is set. Once the goal has been set then the LC works with the client to decide on what must be done (in practical terms) to get the desired result. A time scale is decided so that the client is certain about when they will get a result.

How often is life coaching needed?

Usually clients find that one session a month is about right, but often clients select periods of time between sessions that allow them to make good progress towards their goals. This is a very flexible matter.

How many sessions will be required?

Usually clients feel the best benefits from a group of sessions. The most useful number seems to be six to eightbut again this depends on what the clients needs are.

How can a good life coach be found?

Finding a good LC is usually achieved by word of mouth. It is also a good idea to have a taster session before committing to a coach. The client needs to feel totally at home with the coach and be assured of complete confidentiality.
